About

The Democracy Project is a 501c(4) non-profit organization. In order to be granted a 501c(4) status by the IRS, an organization must operate primarily to further the common good and general welfare of the people of the community.

For the last 40 years we have watched the systematic takeover of our democratic institutions by multinational corporations and the billionaires who control them. We have watched them rewrite our trade laws allowing them to ship millions of our jobs overseas. We have watched them rewrite our tax laws allowing the rich to pay next to nothing while the middle class is on the verge of becoming extinct. Our largest financial institutions commit fraud and nearly bring down the world economy and yet not one bankster has gone to jail. Our infrastructure is failing. Collage tuition and health care costs are out of control. Income inequality is on the rise and global warming is reaching a critical mass. These are just a few of the challenges we are facing as a country.

40 Years ago America did not look anything like this. We are in this situation today because our government is now owned and controlled by the billionaire class. The interests of We The People no longer matter. Historically, there are only two institutions which can protect the people from the insatiable greed and unlimited money derived from unregulated capitalism; A strong government and democracy itself. Sadly, our once strong government has been corrupted and taken over by the monied interests of our day. The only weapon we have left to wield against the coming oligarchy is democracy itself.

So what can we do? This is why the Democracy Project was created. We have put together a 3 point strategy using democracy, messaging, and education as a way to fight back against this corporate takeover of our democracy.

Democracy:

While billionaires and corporations may control just about everything else in this country, they don’t control the ballot box and that’s the key. There are currently 26 States in America that allow for citizens, people like you and me, to put our own initiatives on the ballot. Initiatives which are free from the corrupting influences of money and politicians. Our initiatives would advance the common good and general welfare of the people. We could fight global warming by putting forth a sweeping solar initiative which would make solar affordable for every home owner and business in the state. We could modernize our electric grid and dramatically increaser the number of electric vehicles. We could create a State bank which would be safe and accountable to the people. Banks which would be prohibited from trading in derivatives or dealing in hedge funds. We could create a public internet which would bring affordable high speed internet to every home and business in the state. An internet which would guarantee net neutrality and equal access for all. Each of this initiatives would save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars while providing thousands of new jobs and business opportunities.

These are just a few of the proposals we have in mind to help fight back against corporate monopoly and return power back to the people. By passing these types of initiatives it will give people the choice of how they would like to spend their money and live their lives which is how democracy is supposed to work after all.

Messaging:

Today, 90 % of everything that we see and hear are controlled by just 5 corporations. That’s really a mind boggling figure when you think about it. News shows, newspapers, magazines, radio, television shows, movies, internet, all owned and controlled by just 5 corporations. On the surface it may look like you have a lot of choices, but in reality, not so much. You are only allowed to see and hear what they want you to see and hear, that is, unless you put in the effort to go out and search for alternative news and information programming. You can have the greatest ideas in the world, but they are meaningless unless you can get your ideas in front of the people.

A key part of our strategy is in our messaging and getting people involved. It’s one thing to sign yet another petition or vote for a politician who says one thing and does another. It’s quite another to have real solutions on the ballot which you can vote for and promote to your friends. Creating the messaging to get these initiatives passed is as important as the initiatives themselves. These corporate monopolies are not going to sit idly by while we bring back democracy to this country. They are going to try and defeat these measures using all of the resources at their disposal, which are quite vast I might add. This is why messaging is so important in passing our initiatives and promoting our ideas.

Education:

A well informed and active citizenry is essential to maintaining a strong and vibrant democracy. As true today as it was at the founding of our country. The problem is multinational corporations don’t want a strong and vibrant democracy. To the contrary, democracy is an impediment to their corporate profits. This is why over the last 40 years there has been a steady “dumbing down” of America. This is why subjects like civics, music, and art are no longer taught in schools and it is why America students ranks so low compared to the rest of the developed world.

This all out assault on a well informed citizenry is also evident in our 4th estate; our free press. In 1987 the FCC did away with the fairness doctrine and our news organizations quietly mutated into infotainment conglomerates who’s sole purpose for being was driven by market share and ratings. There is no more investigative journalism in the main stream media because real news no longer exists. Hard questions aren’t asked anymore because multimillion dollar news anchors know that if they ask those tough questions they will soon be out of a job.

The results of these types of attacks are worthy of note: According to recent polls, only 36% of Americans can name our three branches of government. Less, only 20% know how many Senators there are. Rather than depress you further, suffice it to say that one of the Democracy Project’s primary goals is education, especially in the area of civics. We plan to create informative videos on the Constitution, the Founders, The Declaration of Independence, and so much more. We hope to have an arsenal ready for you which will help you to correct the record for all of the misinformed Fox News friends that you might have.
